How to build a digital marketing campaign

A 2019 Pew Research study showed 96 percent of Americans own a cellphone of some kind, whether it's a smartphone or a standard cellphone (yes there are some there that still exist).

Here were some other data points:

The point? It's awfully hard to find someone these days without a cellphone. Therefore, digital and social media marketing is HUGE!

But how do you put a plan together to get in front of potential customers.

Here are some ways to do that:

Identify Your Goals

Identifying the goals of your campaign is a must. Ask yourself: What am I trying to accomplish? What do I want customers to do? Who are my potential customers?

If you can't answer those questions, don't start any marketing campaign.

Unleash Your Creativity

Once the goals are set, with a target audience in mind, time to let your creative juices flow. Find a slogan, find some creative hashtags, create catchy graphics. Another important tidbit with your campaign, such as a tagline, keep it short, simple and sweet. That's easier for people to remember.

Look at these examples:
  • Nike: Just Do It
  • Kentucky Fried Chicken: Finger lickin' good
  • Reese's: We're not sorry
  • McDonald's: I'm Lovin' It

Choose Your Tactics

Depending on your campaign goals, audience, and budget, these will differ from company to company. But the idea or the concept is similar: How do you want customers to find you? When they find you, what do you want them to do?

Simply, be the leader, the tour guide.

And remember to give them a pleasant and positive experience. Even if they don't buy something, a positive experience will stay with them and they'll come back to when they may find it a better time for them to buy. Or, they may refer someone.

According to kwsmdigital.com, "goal-setting marketers are 376% more likely to report success."

One last thing, set reasonable goals.

ARTICLE: Twitter Launches Live Test of Voice Recordings in DMs

Last summer, Twitter added an audio recording option for people to use in tweets. It had mixed success, but eventually faded. Committed to the idea of audio chat rooms on social media (see Twitter Space tool development), Twitter is tweaking this concept.

According to SocialMediaToday.com, Twitter wants to bring back audio messaging but for DMs.

From SocialMediaToday.com, "... audio clips in DMs could serve a different purpose, and become a more valuable option. ARTICLE: Facebook Is Looking to Reduce Political Content – What Will That Mean for Facebook Marketing?

To many this is a relief (myself included). I admit I've altered my timeline settings to try and minimize or reduce the volume of political content on Facebook. I know I'm not alone. It's one of the reasons Facebook has been challenged in the courts and why it has experienced diminished active users.

As explained by Facebook via SocialMediaToday.com, "As Mark Zuckerberg mentioned on our recent earnings call, one common piece of feedback we hear is that people don’t want political content to take over their News Feed. Over the next few months, we’ll work to better understand peoples’ varied preferences for political content and test a number of approaches based on those insights. As a first step, we’ll temporarily reduce the distribution of political content in News Feed for a small percentage of people in Canada, Brazil and Indonesia this week, and the US in the coming weeks."

Personally, this is long overdue.

That’s a large portion of the global population that has to use text-to-speech programs or screen readers to navigate the digital world.

ARTICLE: Twitter Posts Record Revenue Result in Q4, Maintains Usage Growth

For a while, Twitter appeared to be fading in the social media universe.

Well, if its latest quarterly report is any indication, that is not the case. But there is one area of concern, according to SocialMediaToday.com

According to the article (available here), "Twitter has shared its latest earnings results, posting an increase of 5 million daily active users to 192 million, and a record quarterly revenue result, driven by higher ad spend. But there are some notes of concern, particularly in regards to rising costs."

The article adds, "... growth rate is steady enough, but not exactly setting the world on fire, and that could be a concern when you also consider that Twitter may have just passed its peak interest point. Former U.S. President Donald Trump used Twitter as his primary social network of choice, which should have brought more people to the platform more often. If it did, it didn't contribute significant numbers in the U.S. market."

TikTok taking it next level with latest developments

TikTok is ready to become the social media giant we've known Facebook to be the last 10-plus years.

Several changes made or changes to be rolled out in the near future by the booming platform has great potential to reset the social media landscape with TikTok at the top.

During a very good 25-minute YouTube live event hosted by Michael Stelzner, Keenya Kelly, a TikTok expert, there was great dialogue and information presented about the latest changes made by TikTok or what's on the horizon for the platform. There were are will be many, but I'll highlight the ones I think will have the biggest impact on social media marketing.

Here is full video from Social Media Examiner.

Creator Portal

TikTok has recognized its popularity, but also its complexity. Therefore it has created a section called a "Creator Portal" that has tutorials on the functions and the tools when using TikTok.

One thing you'll have to do is, if you have a personal profile, you'll have to switch to creator profile. It's simple, easy and free. The reason for having a creator profile is it's designed for someone who is working toward having a business on TikTok (I'll get to more on that further down).

First step is to go to your profile and click on the three dots in the upper right-hand corner.

Next, go to "manage account".

You'll see options to switch to creator account or business account. (In the case below I already had switched it to creator account). After this step, it'll walk you through the rest of the process step-by-step.

You're all set. Then, back on your setting and privacy menu, scroll down and you'll come across "Creator Portal." Click on it and you'll get the screen on the right.

Having the creator portal also gives you access to your analytics.

To access the analytics, go to the setting and privacy on your profile and scroll slightly down to Creator.

Next click on analytics.

You can also access your analytics by video. Just click on one of your videos and click on the three dots on the lower right.

Click on analytics.

Bingo. You're now looking at your video analytics.

Q/A section

This feature allows viewers to ask questions about your video, especially if you have a video showcasing a product/services on your TikTok feed. It centralizes a question rather than leaving it in the comment section and hope the creator sees it. Essentially it's a moderator tool for the creator. Questions don't have to be in video, but the responses have to and the responses will be done in a video.

One downside right now is it appears the option is for those with 10,000 or more followers.

E-payments

This is where TikTok has a chance to change social media.

When posting a video on TikTok, especially in a live broadcast, creators will have the option to sell products/services on TikTok and don't have to utilize a third-party system such as PayPal to complete the transaction. The idea from TikTok's perspective is to keep users on its platform. The downside does appear to be that TikTok will keep somewhere between 60-70 percent of the profit.

Other tools

TikTok is again recognizing its place in social media. A couple other areas it's either working on or plans to roll out in the near future include small business resources and TikTok and TV collaborations.

What it appears to be for the small business resources is it'll function similarly to Facebook Ad Manager, but also provide templates for businesses who wish to advertise on TikTok. As you imagine, the reason for this, get more businesses and ad revenue onto the platform.

Why consider Tiktok

If TikTok isn't part of your strategy, now is time to give it serious consideration.

Here's why:

According to omnicoreagency.com ...
  • 41 percent of TikTok users are aged between 16 and 24.
  • 56% of TikTok users are male and 44% are female.
  • Roughly 50% of TikTok’s global audience is under the age of 34 with 26% between 18 and 24.
  • Chinese users account for 80% of the total time spent using TikTok in 2019.
  • 43% of new TikTok users are from India.
  • TikTok users spend an average of 52 minutes per day on the app.
  • 26.5 million monthly active users are from the USA
  • In less than 18 months, the number of US adult TikTok users grew 5.5 times.
  • 90% of TIkTok users visit the app more than once per day.
  • ByteDance’s collection of apps, including TikTok, has a total of 1 billion monthly active users.

More resources

Thinking about creating a business page on TikTok, it'll give you the option to put your website on your profile.
